The Massey Academy of Sport programme started in 2006. Massey is New Zealand's only true national university with campuses in Auckland, Manawatu and Wellington and an extensive distance learning options. Massey has been specialising in distance learning for over 50 year, and we are the experts in helping you complete your studies through on-campus or distance learning.
Our High Performance Coordinators liaise with a network of specialists in psychology, nutrition, and physical conditioning so you can optimise your sporting and academic careers.
At Massey you’ll work with our High Performance Coordinators, who will provide individually-tailored support to assist you with your academic planning, alongside your sport commitments.
We have specialists to help with your academic career, nutrition advice, physical conditioning and sport psychology.
No other university in New Zealand has the level of flexibility that Massey provides, a flexibility that is tailored to the life of a high-performance athlete. With a combination of either on-campus, off-campus or mix-mode study options, and either full-time or part-time study, athletes can fit their study around their sporting commitments and change it to accommodate particular sporting events such as World Champs or Commonwealth/Olympic Games.
As a member of Massey’s Academy of Sport programme, you will receive key sport science services to assist in your athletic development. These include physical conditioning, sports nutrition and sports psychology, provided by High Performance Sport NZ accredited providers where possible. Athletes on the Manawatu campus can also access the human performance lab. More information on our professional service providers is outlined below.
The Massey University Academy of Sport scholarship awards recipients a minimum of $3,000 and up to $5,000 for full-time students, or pro-rated for part-time students for the academic year.
Massey University recognises the costs associated with international competition for athletes and manages a travel fund specifically for athletes who are selected to represent New Zealand at an international event. This is the Travel and Accommodation Fund which provides up to $700. Sporting and Academic criteria apply. You can find out more information including how to apply here.
Academy of Sport athletes receive memberships to the Sport & Rugby Institute gym, the Massey Manawatu Recreation Centre or the Massey Albany Recreation Centre. Academy athletes also receive Massey Academy apparel in recognition of being in the programme.
Our topical, practical seminars keep you up to date with latest developments in the sporting world. Topics covered include anti-doping, media training, mental skills, sports nutrition, self massage, public speaking, self promotion and sponsorship, time management and goal setting.
