Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellowship

Massey University is an international strategic partner of the AdvanceHE (formerly the Higher Education Academy (HEA)).  As such, the University is able to offer staff a range of different development opportunities that can lead to an HEA fellowship.  Massey has committed to this strategic partnership with AdvanceHE to assist in the development of teaching and learning practice across the university.  Attaining fellowship through Advance HE comes with the following benefits:

  • Demonstrates your commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience
  • Identifies your expertise with the entitlement to use post-nominal letters (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA, PFHEA)
  • Provides career opportunities
  • Consolidates evidence of your professional practice in higher education
  • Provides a valuable measure of success

The information below describes the different levels of fellows and the opportunities to gain recognition for your practice in the form of a fellowship.

Associate Fellow (AFHEA)

The Massey pathway to Associate Fellow has assisted almost 100 staff to gain Associate Fellowship since 2017. This pathway best suits those who are new to teaching, but also caters for those in teaching and learning support roles, such as Tutors, Lab Demonstrators and Librarians. Through the Introduction to University Teaching course, Associate Fellows are helped to identify and articulate their understanding of specific aspects of effective teaching, learning support methods and student learning, and to demonstrate how this takes place within their teaching practice.

The Introduction to University Teaching course is offered online in semesters one and two each year. A series of online content modules are completed, and there are fortnightly online discussions to support the course. To complete the requirements for AFHEA, a 1400 word Account of Professional Practice (APP) is required and needs to be supported by statements from two referees. We encourage PhD candidates who have teaching responsibilities to join the course, but employment at Massey in a teaching or learning support role is a requirement.

Fellow (FHEA)

Fellow is more suitable for individuals who are able to provide evidence of a solid teaching background in higher education. There are two pathways to Fellow at Massey.

The first is the Post Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning (PGCertTTL). Completion of two double semester courses is required: 273.784 Learning and Teaching in Tertiary Education and 273.785 Assessment and Evaluation in Tertiary Education.

Second, is an experiential route that requires reflection on teaching and a 3000 word Account of Professional Practice. A series of online workshops support the reflection process and the writing of the APP. An observation and two supporting statements from referees are required to corroborate the Account of Professional Practice.

Senior Fellow (SFHEA)

Senior Fellow suits highly experienced academics who are able to provide evidence of a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning. The Massey pathway to SFHEA involves a series of workshops, reflection on your impact, writing a 6000 word Account of Professional Practice (APP). This includes two case studies and a Reflective Account of Practice. The APP is verified by the inclusion of two supporting referee statements.

Principal Fellow (PFHEA)

Principal Fellow is for individuals who are able to provide evidence of a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice. This may be within Massey or wider (inter)national settings. PFHEA is attained by making a direct application to AdvanceHE. Book a consultation with a Teaching Consultant to get your application underway.
