“Everything we did was useful to me at work…”

I started as a lecturer in microbiology at Massey University in 2002 and, like most new University lecturers, had got the job on the basis of my science research experience. My first experiences of teaching were lecturing to students, as I had been taught at University, and I thought ‘there has to be a better way for students to learn’. A colleague suggested I enrolled in 700 level extramural education papers at Massey. The next semester I started the postgraduate certificate in tertiary teaching - a recognised teaching qualification for tertiary teachers. The part-time extramural study fitted around my work and other commitments and I especially liked that the topics and assignments were relevant to my everyday teaching practice; everything we did was useful to me at work. The programme was challenging: it completely changed how I think about and approach my teaching and I now have a much better understanding of teaching and learning. I’m now willing and able to try new things and enjoy my teaching enormously - and I think that students are learning more too. This program was a major step on my professional journey as a tertiary educator.
