Postgraduate Diploma in Health Service Management
Graduated in 2012
Professional Nursing-Lead, Aged Care, Transitional Community Care and Palliative Care Services, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services

“I believe that the content and variety of this qualification can be interpreted into operational practice within any health-care system within the OECD and beyond…”

My study experience was fantastic. I could not have had better support, from the excellent administration staff through to individual course leaders/lecturers.

This qualification was the catalyst for me breaking into the senior nursing ranks in Australia.

I completed this study after having moved from New Zealand to Australia. Whilst the New Zealand and Australian health care systems have much in common, there are numerous practice, environmental and cultural differences.

I thought it was going to be a major challenge to interpret my learnings into the Australian context. Turns out this was achieved with minimum effort. This ease of transition reflects the high-quality and standard of Massey’s course material and support systems.
Moving career focus from clinical leadership/management role to a formal managerial/leadership role within health requires a differing set of competencies.

For the first you must have a much broader strategic knowledge base than that of human, fiscal and material management. The second requires an understanding of the national and international constraints within which health care work is undertaken.
You must also be able to contextualise this knowledge into the day-to-day operations of your respective area of practice and expertise. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Service Management taught me all these essential skills.

This is my second senior nursing role since moving to Australia. I am currently the professional nursing-lead for the Aged Care, Transitional Community Care and Palliative Care services for Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services. My portfolio covers three hospitals and associated community services.

It’s not easy to study at this level – but it’s not meant to be. It means when you do graduate, you do so with the pride and knowledge of a job well done and with a qualification that can take you places.
